For those of you who have never been to a Friends lecture, try it, you'll like it. Lectures are easy to find with ample lighted parking about 200 feet from the door. We have drawings for many free wonderful plants at every lecture. Come early to socialize and enjoy coffee and cookies before the lectures.
Important: Beginning with the Friends of the Arboretum lecture on 2-19-98, there will be a $5.00 fee for non-members. The lectures will continue to be free to those with current membership. Please bring your membership card. We will have a current membership list at the door should you need a replacement card. Memberships will be available for purchase at the door. Entrance is free to all NC State students with ID.

Douglas Ruhren and Edith Eddleman: Seasons of the Perennial Border
$20.00 a session.
9:00 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.
This class will provide an in-depth view of the Arboretum perennial
borders as presented by co-curators Douglas and Edith. They will
lead, at most, 20 people through the borders, discussing identification
and culture of the significant perennials of September. This
will
be an ongoing series, about eight sessions/year, that will allow
you to learn perennial gardening from the two people who are
on
everybody's list of the most knowledgeable gardeners/designers.
Do not pass up these chances to "pick the brains" of Douglas
and
Edith. Fees from the classes will be used to buy plants and supplies
for the perennial borders at the Arboretum.
The next class is October 17, 1998.

Neal Rassman: Japanese and Chinese Gardens: A Contrast

a Chinese garden to visit. Charleston, SC landscape architect
Neal Rassman will use his twenty years experience of teaching,
travelling and designing to help us understand the differences
between these two types of gardens.

Dr. Michael Dirr: In Praise of Plantsmen

Dr. Dirr's talk will be about, "Those who have walked the garden
path, those presently trundling, and those yet to leave deep footprints.
The men and women, their contributions, plants, literature, passion
and indomitable spirit." Wow! I can't wait to hear that talk.
And, it's a special lecture to help raise money for the Education
Center. Not only that, but he is personally bringing dozens of
hand-picked plants from Georgia for us to sell at a benefit auction!
Tony Avent has agreed to be the auctioneer, so you know its going
to be a fun, memorable evening. As an added bonus, Dr. Dirr has
agreed to sign copies of the newest edition (published this fall)
of his woody plants bible, "The Manuel of Woody Plants", which
we will be selling. No need to pre-register, pay at the door.
