Annual Color Trials

Annual Color Trials 2010

Exciting new annual and herbaceous perennial varieties are evaluated here during the summer and winter for their performance in our region.

The JC Raulston Arboretum is one of the official All-America Selections (AAS) testing and display sites for new seed varieties of bedding plants. Early each spring and fall, plants for the AAS trials are grown from seed in our greenhouses, until they are large enough to be planted outside. You will also find many new plants from other commercial growers on display and being evaluated in these performance trials.

The peak of the flowering season, June to August, is filled with brilliant color, when over 500 entries are on display. Each variety is rated weekly for performance, appearance (size, shape, and flowering), and susceptibility to other problems, such as insects and diseases by an AAS judge. The results are published on our Web site at
