Lath House

Future Lath House plantings
Shifting bands of sunlight move uniformly across plants throughout the day.

Visit the Lath House often to discover some of the newest plants arriving at the JC Raulston Arboretum.

This shady structure creates a very plant friendly environment. Many plants considered marginally winter hardy or especially choice and rare are planted here first for the extra protection this microclimate provides. In the summer the intensity of the sunlight is reduced, lowering temperatures and maintaining a higher humidity. During the winter, it helps retain radiant heat. Raised planting beds provide excellent drainage and aeration.

Some plants find a permanent home in the Lath House. Many new plants will only start here, and as they grow and prove their hardiness, they will be moved to other areas of the Arboretum.
