The Arboretum comes alive this month with so many fabulous winter delights! Witchazels (Hamamelis) are in full bloom, and the colorful, plump buds of the Japanese flowering apricot trees (Prunus mume) are starting to open. Mahonias are making a strong statement in the Arboretum now, with their showy, lemon-yellow flower spikes. The first pink blossoms of the Lenten roses (Helleborus ×hybridus) are now emerging, in the Winter Garden and the Lath House areas. The conifer collection is delightful mosaic of blues, grays, and greens, and the fragrance of wintersweet (Chimonanthus praecox) cannot be missed.
