Sponsored by the Capital City Camera Club and the JC Raulston Arboretum

"Taking Control of Your Images"
Jim Lamb, Capital City Camera Club
June 23, 2012 (Saturday)
9:00 AM–4:00 PM

If you're ready to take your garden photographs to the next level, this day-long photography workshop is for you. From the smallest flower to big picture garden vistas, go beyond point and shoot with your digital camera.

Students receive instruction in three areas:

  • Terminology and Technology
  • Composition and Creativity
  • Before and After the Shoot

The course is geared to more advanced cameras with shutter and aperture priority, however, DSLR cameras are not required. Bring your camera equipment and manual and prepare to shoot the Arboretum at its early summer peak. Experts in Canon, Nikon, and Olympus cameras will be available to answer your questions. As with all workshops, space is limited and advance registration is required.

Concrete Workshops

The JC Raulston Arboretum is offering two concrete workshops in June. Beth Jimenez and Amelia Lane, two of the JCRA's talented volunteers and owners of Lasting Impressions, are leading these workshops. Participants will learn how to create concrete hypertufa troughs and leaf impressions on their own and will go home with a completed project in each workshop. All supplies are included. For details, please visit the JCRA's Web site (links below). As with all workshops, space is limited and advance registration is required.

Leaf Buck$

by Anne Porter, Director of Development and Elizabeth Overcash, Children's Program Coordinator

What are Leaf Buck$? They are coupons that come in a booklet of five and will be used as a child's ticket for various JCRA children's programs. Each Family/Dual and above membership is eligible for one booklet—a $50 value. One Leaf Buck will be used to register one child for most children's programs offered. Additional booklets may be purchased for $50, if needed.

The new Leaf Buck$ will be distributed at the Summer Solstice Ice Cream Social on June 20, 2012, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Please join us for this free family fun event.

Family/Dual and above members will be receiving more information in the mail very soon. If you have other questions or comments regarding the Children's Program or your membership, please contact Elizabeth Overcash at (919) 513-7007 or elizabeth_overcash@ncsu.edu or Anne Porter at (919) 513-3826 or anne_porter@ncsu.edu.

Children's Programs

by Elizabeth Overcash, Children's Program Coordinator

Garden Storytime Series
Friday, June 1, 15, and 29, 2012
10:30 AM

Grab your picnic blanket and come join us in the garden for storytime! We meet at the Bobby G. Wilder Visitor's Center and head out into the gardens for stories, songs, movement, and a craft to take home. There is a cost of $10 per child for all three storytimes. Advance registration is required.

The Butterfly Lady
Monday, June 11, 2012
1:00 PM

Spend the afternoon with the Suzanne, the butterfly lady. Children will delight in learning about the amazing butterfly life cycle. There will be butterfly eggs, caterpillars, chrysalises, and adult butterflies to see up close, and maybe one of you will change into a butterfly! Painted lady butterfly caterpillar rearing kits and host plants will be available for purchase from the Butterfly Lady. This is a free program, open to all ages with their caregivers. Advance registration is required.

Summer Solstice Ice Cream Social
Wednesday, June 20, 2012
6:30 PM–8:30 PM

Come spend the longest day at the Arboretum enjoying Howling Cow ice cream sundaes! While here, the whole family can participate in a collaborative weaving project, enjoy fun family activities, and learn about the Arboretum's children's programs. And don't forget to catch the sunset from on top of the A. E. Finley Rooftop Terrace at the end of the night. This is a free activity for children of all ages. Advance registration is requested.

To register for these children's programs, please contact Elizabeth Overcash, children's program coordinator, at elizabeth_overcash@ncsu.edu or (919) 513-7007. Space is limited.

A Call for Help

Do you like working with children and plants? We need more children's program volunteers to help with our growing program. Possible jobs range from assisting with the planning of programs to the preparation of materials to actual work on the day of the program. Recent programs have transformed volunteers into clouds of rain and sun, testers of whether a blueberry sinks or floats, and master artists with vegetables. To join the crew, please contact Elizabeth Overcash, children's program coordinator, at elizabeth_overcash@ncsu.edu or (919) 513-7007.
