Celebrate NC Wines!
As North Carolina grape producers wrap up their fall harvest, North Carolina State University raised a toast to the rapid growth of Tar Heel vineyards and wineries at the first annual "Celebrate NC Wines!"
The November 6, 2005 event featured wine tasting from eleven of North Carolina's finest wineries, a public-opinion competition, hors d'oeuvres, and music on the grounds of one of the nation's leading public gardens – the JC Raulston Arboretum. The weather was spectacular and unusually warm – making it the perfect atmosphere for enjoying the fall garden and sampling delicious wines and foods.
Those who attended also were treated to a very special demonstration by MaryAnne Drake, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Food Science; NC State Sensory Service Center. Drake, an award-winning and internationally recognized food and flavor specialist demonstrated the "art" of pairing wines with a variety of cheeses, fruits, nuts, and chocolate.
Throughout the day, scientists with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences were on hand to discuss and demonstrate their work that continues to strengthen the burgeoning grape and wine industry in North Carolina and helping to boost related specialty crops and enterprises. They included:
John R.
Meyer, Ph.D., Professor of Entomology
Grape Insect Management & Grape Root Borer Management
