J. C. Raulston's Slide Collection
Everywhere J. C. Raulston went, his camera was in tow. His slides recorded much of what he saw throughout the years. The slides were used in classes, for publications, to record ideas and events, and most certainly all the great plants he came across. He shared them with others and even gave away extras in a box outside of his office. In this sharing spirit, his slide collection is now available for everyone's enjoyment and education.

Statistics
J. C.'s slide collection is quite large. There are 84,356 slides organized in 129 boxes. To date, 83,704 slides have been scanned. Unfortunately, 652 slides are missing. These were likely loaned out over the years. If you have one of these, please return the slide(s) so we can scan it and share it with others. Scanning took place nearly every weekday from March 2004 through October 2007. Names for 3,308 taxa have been recorded on 29,446 slides.
Acknowledgements and History
Slide database record keeping began in the late 1990s by J. C. Raulston and Val Tyson. Art Kelley, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, NC State University and original NCSU Arboretum Webmaster, assisted with the project and scanned several slide boxes. In early 2000, Chris Glenn took over for Art and continued scanning. Unfortunately, Chris's scan files were lost due to a computer failure and the project was put on hold temporarily. Beginning in early 2003, Vivian Finkelstein began entering all handwritten notes on the slides into the database. She volunteered over 2,000 hours to complete this task over many months. The North Carolina Association of Nurserymen (now the North Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association) provided the JCRA with a grant to purchase a new slide scanner and bulk feeder in late 2003. Chris resumed slide scanning in March 2004 using the new equipment purchased with the NCAN grant. Heather Barkley, Jack Lamm intern, assisted with the project for the summer of 2004. Linda Glenn began reviewing the slide records in 2005. J. C.'s slide collection was added to the Arboretum's Web site in November 2006. In December 2006, Bobby Wilder donated a new computer system and Linda and Jerry Glenn donated a software package for the slide scanning project. Instead of taking at least two weeks to scan one box of slides, only two days were required with the upgrades. One slide now takes slightly less than one minute to scan instead of the nearly nine minutes it used to take. On October 10, 2007, the last slide was scanned. J. C.'s slide collection is on loan from Tracy Traer.
