J. C. Raulston's Slide Collection

Slide 071-0357Search Help

Enter your search term(s) in one, some, or all of the search fields. The search page uses a "contains" search command. Complete or partial term(s) may be searched. For instance, the search term "cer" typed in the "Botanical name" search field will find any genera containing "cer" including Acer, Cercidiphyllum, Cercis, and Lonicera. This search will also find any occurrence of "cer" in the specific epithet (i.e. "cernuus" in Saururus cernuus) and any other word found in the plant's botanical name (i.e. Sisyrinchium angustifolium 'Lucerne').

For all search fields, please only search one word or part of one word at a time. Multiple word searches (like those used on <www.google.com>) will yield searches with very little or no results unless the words are listed in the exact order that they were typed in the search field. For instance, searching for "cercis can" will find all "Cercis canadensis" listings, however, searching for "cer can" at the same time will yield no results.

Search All

All slide database fields (see below) combined into one searchable field.

Box Number

The slide collection is organized in 129 boxes. The boxes are sequentially numbered from 001 through 129. Boxes are loosely organized into various topics. View a list of all the boxes.

Slide Number

Most boxes include over 600 slides per box. Slides are numbered sequentially starting at 0001. The highest number is 1558, although most boxes end in the 600s. Since many slides were given away or loaned over the years, all numbers are not in all boxes. View a list of every slide. Warning: this is a very long list and it will take a long time to download. Some slides include an alphabetical "subslide" suffix. These are used when identical slide numbers exist.

Date

The date recorded is the month and year the slides were processed, not taken. Dates generally range from March 1958 through December 1996. Every year does not have a month provided and every slide does not have a date. View a list of all the dates.

Photographer

J. C. Raulston took the majority of the photographs in his collection. However, some were given to him by others. View a list of all the photographers.

Country

Many countries are represented in the collection. View a list of all the countries.

States, Provinces, etc.

Numerous states, provinces, and other constituent units of a nation are represented in the collection. View a list of all these regions.

City

Many cities are represented in the collection. View a list of all the cities.

Location

The locations recorded are the names of the places visited. These are usually the proper names of nurseries, public gardens, etc. View a list of all the locations.

Key Words

Non plant subjects are recorded in this field. Words like "house," "brick," "garden," etc. are included. A list of these entries cannot be provided since it is a very, very long list.

Other Notes

Entries in this field are similar to the key words, however, they consist more of comments (sentences) versus single word entries. A list of these entries cannot be provided since it is a very, very long list.

Botanical Name

A large portion of the slides are of plants. Many of these have their plant names recorded. Botanical names for 3,319 taxa are recorded on 29,483 slides. View a list of all the botanical names.

Common Name

Common names for many of the botanical names recorded are known and are included. Unfortunately, not all taxa have a recorded common name. Use a botanical name search for better results. View a list of all the common names.

Family Name

Family names for each of the botanical names are included. View a list of all the family names.

Only Slides Scanned Versus All Slides

Toggling the "Only Slides Scanned" radio button yields a resulting page that only includes slides that have been scanned. Toggling the "All Slides" radio button yields a resulting page that includes all slides along with the ones that are missing.
