Kishia Moore Fletcher

Kishia Moore 2011 Kenan Fellow Kishia Moore Fletcher recently led a workshop titled "Seeing, Wondering, Theorizing, Learning: A Two-Day Workshop on Inquiry-Based Instruction in K-5 Science." The powerful Mitchell County teacher got stellar reviews from colleagues: "This was a wonderful workshop! I enjoyed all of the experiments and hands on activities we participated in... It has inspired me to use more inquiry based lessons in my class and to seek out additional science workshops to enhance my understanding of scientific concepts... Very inspiring; Enjoyed the class! Great hands on experiments; Absolutely wonderful! ...No repetition from other workshops, great pace, engaging! I will look into Kenan Fellowship opportunities as a result."

Where STEM is Endemic

Talia Swiney portrait Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) applications are used everywhere in hospitals. Just ask Kenan Fellow Talia Swiney. Ms. Swiney is an eighth grade math teacher at Ellerbe Middle School in Richmond County, North Carolina. For the last two summers she has shadowed hospital employees in a variety of positions at FirstHealth, a community hospital that serves the people of Richmond County and surrounding areas. She used the behind-the-scenes opportunity to document STEM applications related to health care and to integrate examples into her lessons.

Dr. Sam Houston portrat Congratulations to Dr. Sam Houston, President and CEO of the North Carolina Science, Technology and Mathematics Education Center and Chair of the Kenan Fellows Program Board of Advisors. Dr. Houston received the prestigious Public School Forum of North Carolina's Jay Robinson Leadership Award for Exemplary Service to K-12 Education. In the words of Dr. John Burris, President of the [Burroughs Wellcome Fund][bwf], "Dr. Houston has served the citizens of North Carolina and the nation through his vision of excellence in education. His experiences over the years have evolved as he recognized the value of scientific discovery and technology innovation that was needed to solve many of the world problems."

Zebetta King portrait Congratulations to Kenan Fellow Zebetta King, Class of 2007! Ms. King recently received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The Bulletin at North Carolina State University highlighted her [trip to the White house] [wh] to receive the award.

Diane Ireland

Diane Ireland, a new Kenan Fellow in the Class of 2012, has just begun her Kenan Fellowship and is already hitting the road in North Carolina. Ireland is engaged in a project titled "Logistics: More than Trucks and Trains", and working alongside Mentor Kathleen Patterson, the growing importance of the flow of materials and services in our state is making an impression on her.

Carrie Jones

Carrie Jones portrait Carrie Jones (Class of 2008) was recently elected Director of [National Science Teachers Association] [nsta] District VI. She will represent North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee for the next three years. Jones is a teacher at [Middle Creek High School] [mchs] in Wake County.

New Kenan Fellows Announced

After a competitive application and interview process, new Kenan Fellows for the Class of 2012 have been selected. In late April, these Fellows will join their Mentors in two locations across the state for introductory meetings, planning sessions and dinner.
