David Fox

by Warren Buff

David Fox is a Raleigh native. David Fox is a swimmer on the United States Olympic team. He got on the team with a time of 22.50 seconds - barely enough to make the team. He said after beating Bill Pilczuk, "First or second doesn't matter now, I'm on the team."

David Fox doesn't breath while he swims. This increases your speed because, when you lift your head up to breath, you slow down. He says, "I didn't swim a smart race. I spun my wheels for the first 25, and it almost cost me. Somebody told me I was in fourth place. But I composed myself and just stormed into the wall." The Sanderson High School student is second place, and is now going to Atlanta.

But 50 meters isn't all he'll be swimming in Atlanta. Gary Hall's victory allowed Fox to become an alternate on the 400 - meter relay team. He was weakened by a virus when he tried to make the team for 100 meters, but is glad he made it for 50.

But Fox will not return to his Raleigh home before the Olympics. He is training in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He also hopes to swim in a meet in Charlotte in June.

Fox said, "Perseverance is the key to success in life." At eleven, he struggled to make the relay team at Northbrook Country Club. At twelve, he still struggled. Now he is going to the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
