Another much overlooked tool is the other media disk which ships with most new Macintosh computers called the Hardware Test Disk.  This may be a partition on the Install/Restore media especially if it is a DVD.  This media contains software that runs in the firmware of the main logic board and can verify that hardware is working even if the boot hard drive is not functional.
