Now that you know what degree you are interested in pursuing, the following guidelines will assist you in the process of changing your major. In addition, you can learn how your current coursework will fit into your major of choice. To find the specific courses required for graduation in every undergraduate major at NC State, you will want to visit the NC State Degree Requirements web page and select the major or majors that are of interest to you.

To change your major

  1. First, learn the general process for changing majors at NC State by visiting the Intracampus Transfer Policy web page. It provides an overview of the process, as well as provide links to the specific requirements each college is looking for in transferring students.

  2. Make sure you meet the requirements listed in the Intracampus Transfer Policy.

  3. Once you have determined that you meet the transfer requirements for your intended major, go to the college (usually an Assoc. Dean's Office" or Academic Affairs office) in which the new major is housed and request admission into the desired major.

    • You will be given a Curriculum Change Form (gold in color) that will be signed by the Assistant or Associate Dean, admitting you to the new college and major.
    • You will also be assigned a new adviser.

  4. After this first signature has been obtained on the Curriculum Change form, you then take the form to your current college.
    • Once again, an Assistant or Associate dean signature will be given on the Curriculum Change form, this time releasing you from your present major.

  5. The Curriculum Change Form is then either returned to your new college or is taken to the Office of Registration and Records (1000 Harris Hall). You will be told to which location to take the form by the admitting college.

NOTE: Exceptions include the College of Management.

  • Students in the College of Management will have the above paperwork process completed for them unless they are exiting from the College of Textiles.

How your coursework will fit in a different major

You can see how your coursework will fit in a different major by requesting a " Temporary Advisement Report"* in Pack Tracks (TRACS).
  1. To access the Temporary Advisement Report, first log into Pack Tracks (TRACS) using your Unity ID and password.

  2. Once in Pack Tracks, select Academic Info and then Degree Tracking.

  3. On the Degree Tracking page, look in the middle of the page for red lettering titled "Request Temporary Advisement Report".

  4. Follow the instructions to add up to 4 majors that you are considering. The system will update overnight, and the next day you will be able to see how all of your coursework fits into a different major.

To find out more about specific requirements for transferring into some specific curricula, such as Management, Design, and Engineering, we suggest you utilize the Advising Central FAQ database.

*Keep in mind the Temporary Advisement Report is conservative in nature. There may be additional substitutions a college will grant based on the courses the student has in his/her background. It is best to talk to an adviser in the college prior to enrolling in any courses toward that major and to double check how your credits will apply toward the degree. Information on advisers that can help you explore other majors can be found on the list of Coordinators of Advising.

If you have additional questions about this process or you are curious about a major, and do not meet the transfer requirements to enter the new major, feel free to Ask an Adviser.
