Adding Double Majors and/or Minor(s)

The decision to pursue a minor(s) or double major depends on your academic and personal interests. As with most decisions, it is your interests and priorities that decide whether or not to study an additional academic area. You will gain extra skills and knowledge that could make you more competitive in the job market. Some questions to ask yourself:

    1. How much more time will it take for me to graduate?
    2. Is it worth it to me to spend the extra time and money?
    3. How important is the minor or double major to me?
    4. Do I want to add more skills for personal reasons or make my skills more competitive in the job market?

Double majors

Double majors can also be advantageous to your career aspirations, though they are not required to be competitive in the job market. Generally, if you can get a double degree within two additional years of your first major, it may be worth your time and money. The more flexible a degree is, the easier it is to complete a second major in a relatively short time frame. If pursuing two majors would take longer than two additional years, you have a decision to make. You could pursue double bachelor degrees or graduate with one degree and save what would have been your second major as your graduate school program. A graduate degree helps you master expertise in a particular area and as such, gives you an advanced degree that may advance your career options more so than two undergraduate degrees. In deciding whether or not you want to pursue a double major, it is good to talk to an expert (coordinators of advising) in each field or to an adviser in Advising Central who will help you evaluate your options.

Minors

Minors allow you to gain skills in a second area that compliments your main interests in your major. A minor is a small grouping of courses in a particular field that is important to developing a broad based knowledge of an academic area in a relatively short period of time as compared to that of doing a second major.Depending on your personal interests, there could be numerous minors that would fit well into this major. If you are thinking of combining a major and minor, we suggest contacting an expert (coordinator of advising) in your major and the minor adviser to discuss your interests.
