What is Meridian?

Meridian is an electronic journal, published bi-annually, dedicated to research and practice of Information and Communication Technology in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Meridian features research findings, practitioner articles, commentary, and book excerpts by educational researchers, technology designers, classroom teachers, and authors who wish to share and expand teaching and learning experiences with computer technologies in K-12 classrooms and beyond.

An online journal has unique aspects that differ from more traditional publication venues.  We strongly encourage authors to be creative in using the Internet as an innovative publishing medium. Ideas include, but are not limited to, video, audio and interactive components.

Are you considering submitting but are unsure of expectations? Please review some sample articles or email Meridian and share your concerns with us. We will do our best to help.

What Does Meridian Publish?
You can contribute to Meridian in the following ways:
  • Original Research: Research based article in the area of Information and Communication Technology in K-12 education
  • In Practice: Usually written by or with classroom teachers about practical classroom applications of technology
  • International Original Research: International articles based on research in a country outside the United States. These articles are often published in multiple languages.
  • International In Practice: International articles based on teaching practice in a country outside of the United States. These articles are often published in multiple languages.
  • Living Article: This article continues to grow as readers and authors add to it. Responses to The Living Article do not need to be as long as a regular manuscript. Authors may submit a manuscript as a prompt for a living article or a response to an existing living article. Read the most recent contributions to the Living Article.
  • Others: Meridian also considers book reviews and multimedia articles. If you have a manuscript or idea that does not fall in these categories please contact the Meridian Editors.

How to Submit a Manuscript

Manuscript Style & Content

Submit manuscripts electronically via email or on CD in HTML, RTF, or text formats.  Manuscripts should be approximately, but not limited to, 5,000 words.  Article files will not be returned, so retain an original electronic file copy.

Include a cover file with the manuscript that states: (a) title of the paper; (b) brief biographies of authors with digital pictures of authors; and (c) author contact information (email, mailing address, phone and fax).

All submissions must follow APA style with correctly formatted references included at the end of the paper.

Provide complete references with your manuscript, including page citations, photo credits, and graphics credits.

Since Meridian is published online, we support authors who wish to take advantage of the flexibility the Internet offers. The use of graphics, links, animation, video, or audio components is strongly encouraged. Meridian editors normally can provide some assistance to authors who are unfamiliar with these types of file formats.

Suggested formats:

  • Graphics - GIF or JPEG format, 72 dpi, maximum width of 600 pixels

NOTE: ALL picture images MUST be submitted in .jpg, .gif, or a comparable image file format. Images embedded in Word and other common word processing applications DO NOT import into web-design applications properly (e.g., .shs scrap files in Word, tables in Word and Excel, screenshots, etc.). If there is a question, please Contact Meridian

  • Video - QuickTime format, compressed
  • Audio - MP3 or RealPlayer formats

Authors must obtain copyright permission for all work owned by someone else that is incorporated in an article, including graphics, photos, video, audio and student work to be considered for publication.  Credits must be included for all media.

Copyright

Authors will retain the copyright of the manuscript but must sign the Electronic Publication Agreement before their articles will be considered. The Electronic Publication Agreement for each author must be sent in the form of a hard copy so that an original signature is on file.

Attached to the Electronic Publication Agreement form is the Educational Resources Information Center (ERIC) release form. We encourage all authors to complete the form and return it along with the Electronic Publication Agreement.

For additional information on copyright, please consult NC State's Digital Scholarship & Publishing Center: NCSU Copyright Info.

Authors must obtain permission for all children and adults appearing in any published photographs or video. Permission must also be obtained for all computer projects (anything created on a computer including graphics, video, animations and presentations) included in the manuscript. Please use the appropriate form:

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) requires Web site operators to obtain verifiable parental permission to collect personal information from children younger than 13. To protect their privacy, Meridian will verify parental permission for any photos of children used and will not use children's true names in articles.

Note: To view these forms, you must have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader. To obtain a current version of the Reader, see the Resources below

Manuscript Selection

Acknowledgments will be sent via email within one week of the date we receive the manuscript. All manuscripts will be reviewed in a double-blind fashion by the graduate student review board.  Authors will be notified 4-6 weeks after the submission deadline as to whether their manuscript has been accepted or requires revision.

If you have questions about the submission process please contact the Meridian Editors.
