Moscow!

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is the largest city in Russia and the third largest city in the entire world. It is called the heart of Russia, the Hero City, the republic's showcase, and several other names. It is located on the banks of the Moskva (Moscow) River. Moscow is over 800 years old. This city the political, industrial, cultural, and transportational center of the country.

Probably the most important place in Moscow and all of Russia is the Red Square. Within the Red Square is the Kremlin, the fortress that is the country's most famous monument. Inside the Kremlin walls are are churches, bell towers, and several other buildings built long ago. Several government building are located here. The Kremlin Palace of Congress, built in 1961, is a former governmental building seating six thousand people that today is used for meetings and entertainment.

Outside of the Kremlin is Lenin Mausoleum. Once indoors, a visitor can see the embalmed remains of the Bolshevik leader, Lenin. On the northeast end of Red Square is the largest department store in Moscow, GUM. There are hundreds of small stores and a shopping mall on the bottom level. Another famous place is St. Basal's Cathedral. The church was built in the 1500s and uses the traditional Russian architecture complete with onion-dome tops that prevent snow from piling on the roof in the wintertime.

The Bolshoi Theater is the most exquisite cultural center in Moscow, inside and out. Tickets to dance, opera, and musical performances in the Bolshoi are always sold out and extremely difficult to get. There are other places where a person can find good entertainment, such as some of Russia's most famous circuses. Concerts can be seen on a regular basis, and movie cinemas are also very popular.
