Setting, Plot Summary, and Opinion
Setting: A suburb of Kansas City, which is very quiet, with very warm summers. The story takes place during the summer of 1919, shortly after World War I.
Plot: Annie Metcalf’s father, Larry has just returned home from being a doctor in World War I. Annie’s father continues to help war victims at St. John’s hospital. Annie starts visiting St. Johns daily. While she is there she meets a man named Andrew. Her and Andrew become very good friends, but there is one problem. Annie’s mom doesn’t approve of her being around the injured men. Annie continues to see Andrew behind her mom’s back. After a while, Annie’s mom finds out and she is very upset with her. Annie and her father are able to convince her mother that it is okay; even good for her to visit the hospital. Annie’s mother becomes more excepting to Andrew’s appearance at dinner. By the end of the book Andrew got a job in Topeka. Annie was sad but happy that he did something on his on. Annie learns that there would be people that want to forget the war. but for Andrew the war will never be over.
Opinion: All in all, our group thought that this book was very good. The beginning was a bit slow, but by the end you are reading to find out what would happen next. We also thought the book had a good message behind it.
