Virtual Time Capsule or World Time Capsule:
Divide students into teams of two and let them consider what it is like to live in their home town...their unique environment. They will select items to include in a Virtual Time Capsule (web page or portfolio). Teachers may wish to limit the number of items...which will make the task more difficult, but the resulting discussions may be more meaningful. Make a list of each item and use colorful adjectives to describe it. Grade Level: K - 12)
Writing activity - Use colorful adjectives to describe in detail the objects you include in your capsule. Tell why each one represents an important part of your daily life or culture. Why should it be included? This may be completed on a word processor or you may do a HyperStudio Stack or a KidPix or PowerPoint presentation and share it orally with the class. (Grade Level: K - 12)
A Thousand Paper Cranes for Peace
Read the book Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. (Grade Level: This book may be read on many levels.) View pictures of the mountains of paper cranes created created by students all over the world. Write about how this makes you feel. Will this type of activity help to promote peace? What else can you do to promote understanding among the children of the world. When you are finished with your writing, go to the directions page and use Origami to make your own paper crane.
Read the Peace Messages from Japanese children. Write a message back to them. You may use a word processor or pencil and paper.
Read One Day in Peace and think about your own version of a day filled with peace. What would it be like? Who would be there? What would they do? Describe your day using a word processor or pencil and paper.
Virtual Time Capsule/World Time Capsule: Your job is to tell students of the future about a math/science-related aspect of your culture or that of a country you choose (or one selected by the teacher). Use charts, maps, or tables to illustrate your "capsule." You may also do a HyperStudio Stack or a PowerPoint or KidPix Presentation. Choose one of the following topics:
Population and its growth in the last millennium - Why are some areas growing faster than others? What factors have an impact on population growth?
The economy and how specific crops or goods affect it - Which factors affect the economy? How and why do you think they have an impact on the region's economy?
Animals or plants living in your selected region - Why do they flourish there? Or...You might also describe endangered species and tell why they are struggling - Describe the most abundant wildlife or plant life and the conditions which affect its survival.
