I Have a Dream , Too
Sarah Johnson

I have had black boyfriends. Sounds like a simple statement, a simple situation. Wrong. I am a fourteen year old white female. I, my family, and my close friends have no problem with it. We can see past race; others cannot.
I dealt with many encounters of name-calling, whispering and dirty looks when we were together. No matter how much we liked each other, we always knew that there were people who didn't see us being happy. They saw a black guy and a white girl.
The term "zebra" was often used to describe me, meaning " white with black stripes". My boyfriend would be referred to as an " oreo"; black with white filling. Because we were seeing each other did not make me less white or him less black. We were, and still are , proud of our race and where we came from. Those who could not see that were blind, because seeing each other did not change us.
Personally, I believe that interracial relationships are harder to maintain than those of the same race. You must like each other even more, to shrug past the disapproval of their peers.
In short, my dream is very much like that of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s. I dream that people will soon see past the hue of our skin, and experience the diversity of the human race.
