Question:  What WAS a ru·bric (rbrk) n. ?

What is a rubric today?  
Characteristics of a rubric used for classroom evaluations:

• Bridge between standards and assessment
• Components:  dimensions, scale, descriptors
• When?  both formative and summative
• Who? students, as well as teachers should use the rubric
• A way to define excellence, especially in dealing with processes or abstract concepts
• Provides a common "language" to help diverse groups talk about a complex process
