Living all over the World, by Yodit E. |
|
| I am twelve years old. My father
works for the Department of State. We have to move to different countries because of his
job. We have lived In many countries, including Ghana, Sudan, Kenya, and Bangladesh. My
fathers job has given me a larger knowledge of other cultures. People in the U.S.
have asked me if they have electricity in Africa and stupid things such as "do you
speak African"? If they had the chance to go to Africa, they would realize that they
have the basic needs of today such as TV and computers. And as for the question "do
you speak African" they would realize that Africa is not one country. There are many
languages in African. My fathers job has not isolated me from other cultures. Although I have lived in many countries, the United States is still my home. We are originally from California; however I call Virginia my home; this is because I live in Virginia whenever we live in the U.S. because my fathers office is in Washington, DC. I remember when my family and I were evacuated from Sudan. We had moved into the house we had just bought before moving to Sudan. We live in a private neighborhood in Chantilly and so every week, the man we knew as "the water guy" would come out in his truck and clean the roads. The kids in the neighborhood and I used to ride our bikes in the water. My neighborhood friends and I used to chase the ice cream man to stop. I can still remember he was an oriental man. In the front he had a Buddhist figure so I imagine he was Buddhist. My sister and brother would tell the ice cream man to wait while I ran and got the money. Now my fathers job has brought me back overseas. I now live in Bangledesh. This summer, I will be going to Ethiopia because my mom is from there. I will also be going to Kenya and the Ivory coast. I feel that being a global nomad has helped me and will continue to help me later in life. |

| DHAKA, BANGLADESH, by Simon I. | |
| Most people that have lived in
Bangladesh like the place. I know an American who has stayed in Bangladesh for 47 years.
Though I was not born here and havent lived here my whole life, I like the country
because I have become used to the culture because my parents are Bengali. I was born in
Boston, Massachusetts. I lived in America for 5 years and then I came back to Bangladesh.
I feel that this is home for me because I lived here most of my life. The place I think I
enjoy the most in Bangladesh is Dhaka. Dhaka is a dirty, polluted city. It has high birth rates and a lot of poverty. Despite the poverty you can get things for much lower prices in Dhaka because you can bargain a lot. There are good areas in Bangladesh where the rich people stay and there are dirty and populated places where the working class of Bangladesh live. There are many different types of transportation in Bangladesh like baby taxis, buses, rickshaws, and tempos. The most common one used by average people who cant afford a car is the bicycle rickshaw. The rickshaw is used to cover small distances in Dhaka and is very cheap. Baby taxis are motorcycle-like vehicles that have three tires. The baby taxi is also a major source of transportation. The other kind of transportation is the bus. There are different types of buses in Bangladesh, some of which are really overcrowded and dirty, and some of which are cleaner and air- conditioned, which is pretty good compared to the other ones. Most buses have a lot of load on them so they tilt to one side of the bus because it is very unbalanced. But many people use it since they cant afford a private car or baby taxi. Overall, the types of public transportation which are available in Bangladesh arent too comfortable. The types of food that Bengalis eat varies. Most of the dishes that are eaten by Bengalis originate from India. Overall, Bengalis eat a lot of spicy food. The main food course of any typical Bangladeshi home is rice. With the rice, Bengalis eat some type of curry such as beef, mutton, fish, or chicken curry. An appetizer before that would be a mixed vegetable course people call bhaji. After having all this, Bengalis will eat lentil soup with their rice which they call dahl. All of these meals are eaten with the hand. This is the major diet of a typical Bengali in Bangladesh. These foods are important to me because this my true cultural food and I should have it more often. I like the cultural foods of my original country and I hope the culture and the style that Bengalis make it in never dies out because it is very tasty to me.

| Seoul, Ranked 6th best city in Asia, by Sang Joon P. | |
| I was walking through Seoul, the
capital city of Korea. Its a very busy city, with cars honking everywhere and people
moving in all directions, There are trees everywhere that filter the air, and the cars and
skyscrapers make the country a developed country. There are roads going millions of
directions. Some are elevated while some are underground. Highways cross the " Hang
Gang" river. I came to Bangladesh because my dad had to come and work here. Then he started his own company. I consider myself a Korean because I was born in Korea. I always go to Korea every summer to visit my aunt and uncles. I also see my cousins and my grandmother. Whenever I go they always wanted to take me to places. Sometimes its the amusement parks or the 63 building, the tallest building in Korea. It is 63 stores high, filled with shopping centers and tourist attractions. Once I went to an amusement park. I rode a ride that made me very dizzy. It was a Tuesday morning so there werent many people. The ride was supposed to be about 3 minutes long. When the ride was almost over, the kids were saying " This ride was so short and boring." So then the guy got so mad that he started the ride again! I was getting really sick while the others were clapping and enjoying the 15 minute ride. After the ride was finally over I threw up. After that, I never wanted to go to the amusement park. My aunts and uncles also take me to the water parks where there are thousands and thousands of people. Once I went on a slide that was very long and had a lot of curves. There were a lot of people so there had to be a line. Then I went after 10 seconds. While I was having fun I saw a girl stopping. Boom! I banged into her really badly. About 15 seconds later, the girl who was behind me smashed right into me. Ouch! I knew how burgers felt after that accident. Seoul may be the capital city, but if you go to other cities its beautiful. In the country, the rice paddies cover millions of miles and yellow flowers all move side to side together. There is a place where there are huge rocks and mountains with blooming red, orange and yellow leaves. Many tourists go to this place so there are hotels.
Its a very famous place where there are clean beaches with soft sand. Here you can ride jet skis and other water sports. The hotel I stayed in was cool. It was a five star hotel. Korea is a fun country and I think that everyone should go there at least once and have some fun. It may take a lot of money to go but I think its worth it. |
