Ken Thompson was named chair, president and CEO of Wachovia in 2001, after the company merged with First Union Corporation. Prior to the merger, Thompson was the chair, president and CEO of First Union. He held other positions of leadership at First Union including vice chair of the corporation and head of global capital markets; president of First Union-Florida; senior vice president and head of First Union Human Resources; and president of First Union Georgia.
Thompson serves on the boards of directors for Florida Rock Industries, Inc., and Carolinas Healthcare System. Professional affiliations include the Financial Services Roundtable, where he is a board member; the New York Clearing House, where he is vice chair and a board member; the Financial Services Forum; and The Business Council.
Highly engaged in community work, Thompson’s civic involvement includes being a member of the Board of Trustees at Wake Forest University; Teach for America; the North Carolina Blumenthal Performing Arts Center; Charlotte Latin School; the YMCA; the United Way of Central Carolinas, Inc., where in 2003 he served as Chair; the Charlotte Institute for Technology Innovation; and Advantage Carolina, where he serves as co-chair.
A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Thompson earned a B.A. in American studies from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and an M.B.A from Wake Forest University.
