Peer Mentor Purpose, Goals, Duties and Responsibilities

| PURPOSE: |
The peer mentoring relationship is
designed to foster a network of support for first
year students of African-American, Native American & Hispanic
decent at NCSU. Mentors serve as peer support personnel
for these freshmen (Mentees) and share program
goals and responsibilities aimed at ensuring the
retention of these particular student groups. |

| GOALS |
To aid in the academic, emotional and socio-cultural
adjustment of first year students of African-American,
Native American & Hispanic decent to college
life at NCSU.
To actively involve upper-class students and
faculty/staff in developing the maximum potential
of these freshmen. |

| DUTIES |
Act as a big brother/sister to the Mentees and
help ease these students’ transition from
high school to college life. |
| |
|
- Meet with assigned Mentees twice a month for
the fall semester and once a month during the
spring semester in person and not by telephone.
If a Mentee is having difficulty, additional
visits may be requested within reason.
- Participate in all necessary training sessions,
workshops and in ECD 224: Special Topics in
Student Development and Mentoring.
- Participate in informal recruitment and admissions
activities pertaining to
African-American, Native American, and Hispanic students.
- Turn in visitation forms by each date due.
- Attend Team meetings and activities and any
other meetings or functions deemed necessary
by the Program Staff
- Refer any Mentees having difficulties to
appropriate university services and resources.
- Carry out all duties promptly and responsibly
with honesty and integrity and to honor confidential
information.
- Maintain the dignity and integrity of the
Peer Mentor Program with the Mentees and Mentors
and the campus community.
- Accept constructive feedback and notify the
Program Staff of any extenuating circumstances
that interfere with performing Mentor duties.
