Mentor Constitution

Being a mentor is about beginning a journey of self-discovery
and unselfish giving, one that not only typifies tradition
in many ethnic cultures, but also on the campus of
NC State University. Undoubtedly African-Americans,
Native Americans, and Hispanics have created a rich
history of individuals who have changed the world due
to the encouragement and inspiration of another who
has run the race a little earlier.
Some of the spheres of a mentoring relationship include
family members, teachers, friends, religious and community
leaders. You have probably been on the mentee side
of these relationships in most cases. Being a peer
mentor means continuing the line of individuals who
are leading the way for others. We change the world
by changing the lives of students here at NC State
University today.
The mentoring process is
also a process of empowerment. The Ashanti proverb “The words of an elder are
more powerful than a charm” captures the essence
of the power that lies in these relationships. Through
the peer-mentoring program we use each relationship
as a means of creating strong, conscious individuals.
Thus, nurturing our collective cultural identity and
survival.
“When a king has good
counselors, his reign is peaceful” ~Ashanti
