Choral music at NC State will have a bit of a different look in 2009! Under the direction of Nathan Leaf, in his second year as Director of Choral Activities, many changes will occur. The group formerly known as the Chamber Singers has expanded into the State Chorale. The Men’s Choir will become The Singing Statesmen of North Carolina. And for now, the Women’s Choir is just that, though in search of a new name and identity. While there will be changes of name, there will be continuity as well with the long tradition of fine collegiate choral music NC State has been known for from the days of Milton Bliss.
Probably the biggest change is the revitalization of the Men’s and Women’s Choruses, presenting literature specifically suited for each, with a particular nod to the former Glee Club tradition of yore, heard to such great effect in recent years in the student-led a cappella groups, the Ladies in Red and the Grains of Time, both of whom will continue to wow their respective fan bases with contemporary pieces for voice alone. And with new recruits, the Ladies and Grains continually reinvent themselves each year!
Be sure to experience a collaboration of voices and instruments when the Combined Choirs and the Raleigh Civic Chamber Orchestra light up the stage with a special performance during the holiday season of a Haydn Mass. So if you have an interest in joining choral music, or simply enjoy a collection of voices, Music@NCState is your number one resource for all things choral.
