Jazz Auditions

Audition dates and times: By appointment with Dr. Parker; see below

 

Where: Dr. Parker's office, Room 210 Price Music Center

 

Audition Requirements:

-All Major Scales

 

-Sight Reading

 

-Improvise over Rhythm Changes or Blues

 

-Prepared piece, to be uploaded here in early August

Drum set players should be prepared to demonstrate all standard styles of jazz, including latin styles

 

Anyone interested in auditioning for an open spot in one of the five jazz ensembles for Fall 2015, please contact Dr. Parker at wes_parker@ncsu.edu to set up an audition time. Auditions will be held the first full week of classes, August 24-27, 12:00 PM-5:00 PM.

 

When signing up for an audition please include in the description what instrument you will be auditioning on.

Wind Ensemble Auditions

When:

Wednesday, August 19-Friday, August 21 and Monday, August 24-Friday, August 28. 10:30 AM-12:00 PM and 1:00 PM-3:00 PM

 

Where: Dr. Garcia's office, Room 215 Price Music Center

 

Students who wish to audition for Wind Ensemble are expected to prepare the following:

All brass and woodwinds should be prepared to play all 12 major scales with arpeggios and the chromatic scale (tongued and slurred). You can use music for this if you would like. Also, prepare up to 5 minutes of music that best demonstrates your ability level. Any interested percussion should contact Dr. Garcia at pdgarcia@ncsu.edu to set up an audition.

Choral Auditions

When: August 19-21 and August 24-25. 10:00am-12:00am and 2pm-5pm

Where: Dr. Leaf's office, Room 214 Price Music Center

Expectations: Each audition is about 10 minutes long, and consists of vocalizing, singing a familiar song, and other basic choral skill evaluation. Those auditioning do not need to prepare a song in advance.

Orchestra Auditions

When: Updated for Spring!

 


When: August 19, 7pm-10pm; August 24, 7pm-10pm; August 25, 2:30pm-5:30pm; August 26, 7pm-10pm

 

Where: Dr. Askim's office, Room 207 Price Music Center

 

Expectations:

 

- Prepare a solo or orchestral excerpts of your choice - generally about 5 minutes or less of music. Solos could be pieces studied in private lessons, an all-state solo, or standard repertoire for your instrument. The piece or excerpt should show your playing at its best. No accompaniment is needed.

 

- Scales - Two scales of your choice, three octaves if possible. String players should play one scale with spiccato bowing.

 

Auditions for string players are primarily to determine if players are capable of handling orchestra repertoire and as a factor in seating. Wind and brass positions are competitive.

Marching Band Auditions

When: First day of Orientation from 4:30pm to 6:00pm, or Band Camp, or by appointment.

Where: Price Music Center

 

Expectations:

 

-All Brass and Woodwind auditions involve all major scales and arpeggios as well as sight reading.

 

-Instruments will be provided during freshman orientation if you do not have your own. Please bring your own mouthpiece and reed.

 

-All Color Guard and Drum Line auditions are held during the first couple of days of band camp beginning on Wednesday, August 13. All prospective new Guard and Drum Line members need to come to Price Music Center to fill out important paperwork between 4:00 pm and 5:30 pm on the first day of their summer orientation session.

Pipes and Drums Auditions

North Carolina State University Pipes and Drums is a Grade IV band composed of students and community members. Experienced pipers or drummers should schedule an audition with Darrell Thompson, ncsupipesanddrums@ncsu.edu, 919 949-1281.

 

Community members brand new to piping are considered but only in the fall semester and still need to make an appointment. NCSU students can learn to play for the band by taking the Beginning Bagpipe Class (MUS 152) offered each semester. For any additional information visit www.ncsupipesanddrums.com.
