Dr. John Sprague has been the Director of the NCSU Pipes and Drums at NC State since 1977. He was a charter member of the pipe band when he entered NC State as a freshman in 1968. He received his BS in Aerospace Engineering (1972), MS in Applied Math (1974) and PhD in Math (1999), all at NC State. He has studied piping at the North American Academy of Piping. He also studied drumming at the School of Scottish Arts and the North American Academy of Piping and is proficient on both pipes and drums, teaching, writing parts, and directing both instruments.

He has been an invited instructor for the Southern Workshop offered each year by the EUSPBA. He has been a board member of SCOT (Scottish Cultural Organization of the Triangle) since it was formed in 2001. In 2004 he appeared on the NC People Program with William Friday, describing his long association with the pipe band at State.

In 2006, he organized the first annual Cary Indoor Solo Piping Contest. Under his direction, the NCSU Pipes and Drums has won 60 first place trophies over the years and is highly respected in the piping community. He currently directs over 50 bandsmen divided into three groups according to experience—the beginning chanter class, the Grade IV band and the Grade III band.
