Unit scientist Joe Hightower received the Excellence in Fisheries Education award at the American Fisheries Society's annual meeting in Lake Placid, New York, September 2006. This award is administered by the Education Section of the AFS and is presented to only one individual annually to recognize excellence in teaching and advising in fisheries education. It is often regarded as the most relevant and prestigious award presented by the AFS, as it recognizes building on the future.
The nomination for this honor was initiated and organized by two of Joe's former students -- Alesia Read and Dave Hewitt. In addition to documentation of Joe's accomplishments, and insight from Alesia and Dave, it included letters of support from nine former students and 19 colleagues from universities, state and federal agencies, and private industry.
