Museum of Natural Science--Polar Palooza Exhibit

The NC-ACS Section has an opportunity to have a table at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Science during an exhibit on the polar ice caps entitiled "Polar Palooza". We are still working on details of what will be demonstrated and are very much open to suggestions. All members of the Local Section (YCC, SCC, student affiliates and any others) are encouraged to participate.

• When: May 24-25, 2008
• Where: North Carolina Museum of Natural Science, Raleigh, NC. See the Polar Palooza Exhibit.
• About our Table: Two volunteers are needed for each 3 hour time slot. At the table, volunteers will help children do hands-on activities, perform experiments for all ages and answer questions*.

To assist with scheduling, we would like to receive (1) the maximum number of time slots you would be willing to work: and (2) the preferred time slots. We cannot guarantee that you will get all time slots, but we will confirm the assigned times and the alternate times well in advance of the opening of the Health Fair.

*This is a new activity and we are very much solititing ideas of what to show. Please e-mail your suggestions to: bill_switzer@ncsu.edu So far we have the following ideas:

• Drop an ice cube into a brim full glass to simulate a glacier melting or breaking off. The glass overflows indicating that sea level should rise. However although the ice cube rises above the rim of the glass, no additional water will overflow as the ice cube melts. Since there the volume of ice actually decreases as it melts, the sea level will not be effected at all if the ice in the Arctic Ocean melts.
• Measure the temperature of water ice and of water ice to which salt has been added to show the freezing point depression. Ice in the ocean should melt before the glaciers since ice in the ocean is in salt water.
