State Fair Volunteer Form

The NC-ACS Section will again participate in the North Carolina State Fair. We will again have both a booth and also present chemistry stage shows, but the name has been changed to in the "Green NC" Exhibit. All members of the Local Section (YCC, SCC, student affiliates and any others) are encouraged to participate. Volunteers will be paired with other volunteers who have worked at the fair before. Volunteers will receive free admission to the fair and also will have the chance to earn a State Fair shirt.

• Please check the schedule and try to identify times when we are light on volunteers. We need a minimum of 4 volunteers for each session and during the week is particularly difficult to fill. Where we have 7 or more volunteers, we are at capacity.
• When: October 15-25, 2009. The fair opens to the public at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 15. There will be only one extended evening shift that day. All other days are divided into 3 shifts spanning from 9:00 a.m. until 9:45 p.m.
• Where: State Fairgrounds, Raleigh, NC. See the NC State Fair web site for information. The exhibit tent is located near Gate 11 just off of Blue Ridge Rd. near the Vet school.
• About our Booth: Four volunteers are needed for each 4.5 hour time slot. At the booth, volunteers will help children do hands-on activities, perform experiments for all ages and answer questions. There will be a separate break room and restroom area for the volunteers who work in this tent.
• Live Stage Shows: There will be 4 presentations each day at 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Volunteer are asked to help with managing the crowds, answering questions about the presentations and presenting if that is a comfortable activity.
• Tickets & Parking: Admission to the fair is free for volunteers, but tickets are required and must be distributed to you. Parking is also free in all fairgrounds lots. Details about parking are not complete yet. More will follow when we know more, but it will not likely be in the usual location.
• Company Logos: If employees from your company volunteer, we will be happy to display your company logo as part of a PowerPoint presentation given during the stage shows.
• Optional orientation lunch: I have 25 passes for lunch at noon on Wednesday, October 14. An orientation session will be held from noon until 3:00 p.m. so that exhibitors can learn about each other's booths.

Fair facts:

Surveys from past fairs show that people are more interested in the Exhibits and Competitions (37%) than the Rides (23%) or Food (26%) or Entertainment (8%).  So people are coming to see exhibits like ours more than anything else!
