How does an engine take advantage of the difference in properties of a liquid and a gas?

Gasses occupy a huge volume compared to the volume of the same amount of material in the liquid state. If a liquid fuel is burned to make gaseous products, those gaseous products occupy a huge volume compare to the volume of the liquid fuel. This increase in volume give the push to the piston.
