History

Sullivan Hall houses University Scholars and provides a computer lab to students. Named after William Henry Sullivan (1891-1959), the twelve-story high rise has a total area of 135,530 square feet. Also, Sullivan Drive honors the name of the successful businessman, supporter of civic affairs, and loyal promoter of NC State.

Though he would have graduated with the Class of 1913, Sullivan transferred from civil engineering to mechanical engineering before leaving the college to work with the N.C. Public Service Company in Salisbury. Two years later, he had risen to the rank of chief assistant engineer for the Southern Railroad. By 1927, Sullivan had founded his own mechanical contracting firm, the W.H. Sullivan Company. He was a prominent citizen of Greensboro, serving as mayor, director of the Chamber of Commerce, chairman of a program for a "Greater and Better Greensboro" and chairman of the War Memorial Committee.

Sullivan served the University through his position as president of the Alumni Association, his membership in the coliseum commission, and as a member of the Athletics Council. He was also a member of the UNC Board of Trustees.
