Frequently Asked Questions

What do I have to do to be in the band?

All you have to do is contact the Director, Dr. Paul Garcia and set up an audition. The audition consists of several scales and some simple sight reading. If you are an incoming freshman, the best time to do an audition is during your orientation. Just stop by Price Music Center and play for Dr. Garcia during one of your breaks. Don't worry about bringing your instrument to Orientation, one will be provided for you. Below is Dr. Garcia's information.

Do I have to come to school early for Band Camp?

Yes, you will have to come to school early for Band Camp, but it does have advantages. The main advantage is for members that live on campus. They get to move in to their dorm rooms three or four days before any of the other students. This gives them first choice when it comes to choosing which side of the room you want, if you want top bunk or bottom, and you avoid the traffic nightmare that usually comes with move in.

I heard that your band memorizes all of their music, is that true?

Yes we do memorize all of our music but it is a part of what makes the "Power Sound of the South" different from many of the other ACC bands.

I don't know if I can memorize my music, how hard is it to do?

Not as hard as you may think. Since everyone has to memorize their music, we end up playing it many many times. When you play the music with the rest of the band, you learn your notes and when to come in with the help of those around you. We also have sectional rehearsals so that each section has a chance to hear how their music sounds by themselves. Even if you have never memorized music before, there is nothing to worry about.

When does the marching band practice during the week?

A: We practice on MWF from 3:40 to 5:30. Practice is located on the Upper Miller Field just north of Jordan Hall.

Will I get any credit for being in the Band?

Yes you will get one credit hour for the class which does give out A/B/C/D grades.

How much will it cost to be in the band?

A: It does not cost a whole lot to be in the band. Total costs after
purchasing items (e.g., band T-shirt underneath uniform, flip folder, gloves. etc.) and a few maintenance/rental charges.

I want to be in the band but I don't have my own instrument, what do I do?

The Music Department has instruments that you can use during marching band season after you pay your deposit. Don't worry about buying your own instrument, we will provide one for you!

What if I am a Park Scholar or will be in orientation during Band Camp?

Don't worry, we will get you caught up. We understand that there are certain circumstances that could prevent you from attending Band Camp. Just make sure that you clear it with Dr. Garcia first and we will make sure that you get caught up!

What do I do If I have questions that are not answered here?

ASK! Send an email to anyone listed on the site and they will help you out! The easiest would be to send it to Dr. Garcia.
