Ponderables

These are problems that are often not-well defined. Students have to conduct websearches for relevant information, or more commonly, make estimates of quantities. This means they must also decide what information is needed. Many of these problems can be solved in more than one way, so students have to determine the approach that works best for them.

Some examples of activities from the classroom and exams:

How many two-step paces is it from LA to NYC?

What are the dimensions of the standard kilogram?

How far does a bowling ball get before it stops skidding and is only rolling?

How many candy bars worth of energy does it take to push a shopping cart past the snack aisle?
