Dr. Michael Paesler
Dr. Michael Paesler recently stepped down as Head of the NC State Physics Department. In that capacity he
became acutely aware that university growth would soon saturate the department's teaching laboratory
facilities. This led to his initiation of the two programs described on this webpage: eTALK and MyTech.
The eTALK research involves the development of a kitlab effort designed to bring synchronous TA instruction
into extramural laboratory programs. With MyTech the Paesler group is studying how the use of personal
electronic devices as replacements for standard teaching laboratory data taking equipment can effect the
learning process.
Professor Paesler's involvement in teaching laboratories includes his direction of the department's Honors
and Majors Laboratories, a role he has assumed for several years. While the majority of Professor Paesler's
earlier research was in arenas other than science education, over the years he has published six times in
The Physics Teacher. He has also demonstrated his commitment to undergraduate STEM education through
serving as PI on a series of 20 NSF Research Experiences for Undergraduate (REU) site programs (through NSF's
Division of Materials Research). He was the sole administrator of this program, which over a period of 20
years sponsored the re-search of over 300 undergraduates. He actively sought to diversify this program by
successfully recruiting 34 African-American students during his tenure. Dr. Paesler brings this commitment
and experience to the leadership of the projects under his direction. Professor Paesler is a member of the
NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
