Science House "Trainers" go Back to School
This summer approximately 40 science and math teachers across North Carolina attended a Train-the-Trainer Technology Workshop. The workshops were conducted by The Science House of NC State University and sponsored by the Golden Leaf Foundation. This Fall, our "Trainers" will be conducting workshops using the calculator (CBL) and computer (MBL)-based lab equipment and the new LabQuest technology for teachers in their schools in the areas surrounding the Lenoir, Asheville, Fayetteville, and Jacksonville satellite offices of The Science House.
New Projects at the Asheville Satellite Office
The Science House has teamed up with Brush Creek Elementary School to go GREEN! Project GREEN stands for Growing Respect for the Environment through Education and Nature. The Science House is providing equipment, support, and lessons to assist Brush Creek in becoming an elementary school which emphasizes using their campus as an environmental study lab to meet their grade level objectives from the NCSCOS.
The Asheville Office is also partnering with the Western RESA to assist in a CSI TEAMS Project. The CSI TEAMS project stands for Creating Student Interest through Techniques that Energize and Alter Mathematics and Science Instruction. The Science House will assist with integrating Math and Science for K-8 schools withing a 7 county area. Teachers joining the project will attend workshops, learn how to use new technologies, and develop rich lessons that demonstrate an interdisciplinary approach.
Job Openings at The Science House
The Oureach Coordinator for the FREEDM Systems Engineering Research Center, a partnership with the NC State College of Engineering, will help plan, implement, manage and report pre-college outreach activities for the center which include Research Experiences for Teachers, Young Scholars (high school student internships), coordinating activities with rural NC middle and high schools, with other outreach coordinators of The Science House, and planning and presenting pedagogically sound science, mathematics, and engineering content using hands-on, inquiry-based teaching methods. Requires an MS in math, science or science education field, engineering or engineering education field or equivalent experience. The Fayetteville Outreach Coordinator will help plan, implement, manage and report the activities of the office. The outreach coordinator will collaborate with The Science House staff at Raleigh and satellite offices to develop science education outreach projects that emphasize hands-on inquiry-based learning, using technology to support high-quality science and mathematics content instruction. Place Based Learning Mini-Grants
We are pleased to announce a new opportunity for our Northeast educational communities to engage in Place-Based Learning. We have funding for Middle and High School mini-grants to support ideas that use Place-Based Learning strategies in Northeaster North Carolina. Science Olympiad Coaches Institute
The 6th Annual NC Coaches Institute will be October 24-25, 2008 at Centennial Campus Middle School on NC State's Centennial Campus. We invite coaches from North Carolina and from across the country to attend this institute. Student versions of the coaches manuals will be provided along with rules for any NC Only events. Girls Collaborative Project Updates
The Science House Girls Collaborative Project will cooperate with the Northeastern Satellite Office to present a Fall Place-Based Learning Forum on November 14, 2008. Research-based strategies in informal learning and place-based learning will be presented at this forum focusing on our northeastern regional service area. The meeting will also kick off the next round of mini-grant applications to be accepted from November 14, 2008 through January 1, 2009.
The WISE High School Chapter, a project designed to encourage high school girls to pursue STEM majors and careers, has begun work at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) High School. NC State University students from the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Village will act as mentors to high school girls in this project funded by The Science House Girls Collaborative Project. Spring Imhotep Academy
Imhotep Academy’s spring session on Mathematics—Exploring our world: Numbers are our friends. Students will discover the power of numbers in science, technology, statistics and discover ways of using numbers effectively. The spring session begins on Saturday, February 7, 2009 and ends Saturday, March 7 and the hours for this session will be from 8:45am –1:00pm on Saturday.
Students, parents and teachers must attend the mandatory orientation scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 2009 at 6:30 pm at The Science House (909 Capability Drive, Raleigh, NC 27606, Suite 1200). We have received your Pre-Registration Form and in order to complete the registration process, we need your payment of $125.00. After December 1, the cost is $150.00. Spaces are filling up fast and remember placement in the Academy is not guaranteed until fees are paid in full. Spaces are filled on a first come first serve basis. Register today.

The seventeenth annual Expanding Your Horizons Conference will be held at North Carolina State University on Tuesday, March 3, 2009. Applications for schools to bring groups of up to seven girls will be available at the end of November. Please watch for updates to our webpage,
Biotechnology Mini-Grants
Applications are now being accepted for the North Carolina Biotechnology Center’s 2008-2009 Mini-Grant Program. All proposals must be submitted electronically using the Biotechnology Center’s online submission process. Proposals must be received by noon on January 21, 2009. The Biotechnology Education Mini-Grant Program offers awards of up to $6,000 to assist in the development and implementation of activities, programs, and courses for biotechnology education and training at the K-12 level.
