The Administrative Division serves as the business office for the Campus
Telecommunicators work 24 hours a day answering thousands of
telephone calls, recording information and assigning appropriate
personnel to handle situations on campus. In the Communication
Center, they have direct access to the Division of Crime Information and
National Crime Information Center to perform stolen item checks, vehicle
registrations, and warrant checks.
Direct lines give instant access to Raleigh Emergency Communications for dispatch
of fire and medical responders. A 24 hour university operated EMS and
Fire Protection system is also activated by group page here. Communicators
have a direct line to a central receiving system where hundreds of intrusion
and fire alarms on campus are monitored. A TDD gives communication to
hearing impaired members of the community. The campus 5000 line voice
mail system is another means of communicating instantly with the community.
A local area network is now on line in the communications center and
gives all Campus Police employees E mail, internet access and huge information
sharing capabilities. Newsgroups on campus can be posted with information
on a daily basis from the center.
Crime Prevention & Community Relations
The primary purpose of the Crime Prevention Division is to act as a liaison between the Police Department and the campus community. Officers provide education outside the classroom to help prevent students, faculty, staff, and visitors from becoming victims of criminal activity. Educating the community about current crime trends, risk reduction techniques, and reporting suspicious activity immediately, enhances the shared responsibility of preventing crime.
One of the duties of the Crime Prevention Division is to develop and maintain crime prevention programs. Some of the programs available are:
The Division is also responsible for providing crime prevention lectures to the campus community. Lectures are offered on the following topics:
- Crime Prevention / General Safety
- Rape and Sexual Assault Awareness / Self Defense Seminars
- Date Rape Drugs
- Alcohol Law Awareness
- Workplace Violence Education
- Holiday / Travel Safety
- Bicycle Safety
The Crime Prevention Division utilizes Mounted Patrol and Bike Patrol officers to accomplish its goal of proactive policing.
The Criminal Investigative Division handles all follow-up on cases which
are reported to the department. The investigators assigned to this area
are specially trained in areas of criminal investigation, such as drugs,
death, arson, financial, rape and sexual assaults, interview and interrogation,
background investigations, and provide dignitary protection.
Patrol Operations has the responsibility to pro-actively patrol the campus
in an effort to prevent crime, solve problems, provide escorts, serve as
building liaisons, and investigate crimes and accidents within our jurisdiction--all
while building partnerships with the campus community.
Patrol officers are divided into four squads. We utilize patrol cars,
numerous bicycles, and several all-terrain vehicles.
The latter of this group is utilized to deter suspicious activity occurring
in undeveloped areas of campus, as well as at football games and
concerts. Our bicycles easily maneuver in densely populated areas
and provide support to many miles we log patrolling on foot.
