SCOPE AND ORGANIZATION

Headed by the vice-chancellor for student affairs, North Carolina State University's Division of Student Affairs is the organization at NCSU that is responsible for all student services except academic counseling, intramural sports, new-student orientation, and the African-American Cultural Center [5.5.1.3].

Student Affairs has an organizational status commensurate with other major administrative units on campus, an annual budget of over $37 million, and a staff of 316 [5.5.1.5]. The policies and procedures for each function of student affairs have been determined and are located in the administrative offices for that function.

Table 10.1 shows the distribution of Student Affairs employees into the twenty activities supervised by the division. Job descriptions for all staff employees are on file within each department and contain the academic preparation required for each position. Only those meeting the specific qualifications are considered for these positions. A study made in fall 1991 showed that 89 percent of the EPA staff held college degrees, including eleven with Ph.D.s and fifty-two with master's degrees in appropriate fields [5.5.1.5; 5.5.1.6]. Table 10.2 shows the frequency of college-degree types in fall 1991, when the most recent compilation of this data was prepared.

Each year, the Division of Student Affairs submits an annual report and an annual plan to the provost. The annual plan, due in March of each year, contains goals for the year and long-term goals for the next five years. Every year these goals are reviewed and evaluated and new goals for the future are prepared. This is the primary mechanism for continuous improvement of student services (see self-study library for a copy of the annual plan for Student Affairs) [5.5.1.6].

According to the annual plan, the mission of the Division of Student Affairs is:
