North Carolina State University
As we approach the end of our Self-Study for the 1990s, I commend the work of the Self-Study Steering Committee, the Principal Committees, and the Self-Study staff for an outstanding job. Their hard work and perseverance have produced the most thorough and careful review and analysis of the work of this institution in our recent history.
The Self-Study affirms the deep commitment of this institution to its historic land-grant mission of teaching, research, and outreach. It demonstrates NCSU's high quality as a major research-intensive university.
The Self-Study also challenges us to measure ourselves by the highest standards of excellence in all our activities and to aspire to preeminence among American research universities. To this end, the Self-Study calls our attention to a number of areas where there is broad agreement among faculty and administrators that enhancement of our activities would be beneficial to the fulfillment of our mission.
Since the quality of our programs is essential to our institutional success, I welcome the insights of the self-study and will give every recommendation my careful and thoughtful attention in the coming months.
I invite and encourage everyone in the NCSU community to join me in careful consideration of the Self-Study and pledge that we will continue this discussion of the most effective ways to enhance the quality of our work and promote the fulfillment of our institutional mission.
