The U.S. and North Carolina state flags will now have company as they fly proudly over the Memorial Belltower – an official flag of NC State University. At their meeting last Friday, the Board of Trustees – by a 9-2 vote – selected the official flag from among three designs. The winning design, which incorporates the new graphic identity (often called the "brick" logo) and the 35-year-old block "S" logo, was created by Lynn Koonce, a graphic designer in the university's Creative Services Office. The process to adopt NC State's first official flag began in May when a contest was announced to find the winning design. A panel of students, faculty and alumni chose five designs from among more than 100 entries submitted by faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the university. A committee of trustees then narrowed the five to the three finalists. The two finalist designs not chosen were similar to each other. They both included the graphic identity, and the school seal, which features the belltower. To keep the contest impartial, the identity of each designer was withheld from the panelists and trustees until the selection process was complete. For having her design selected, Koonce will receive a $1,000 prize.
