2011 Mathews Medal
The Alumni Association recognized four graduating seniors on March 27, 2011 with the Mathews Medal for their efforts to enhance the NC State community. The Mathews Medal program was founded by the Alumni Association Student Ambassadors program.
The Mathews Medal is named for Walter J. Mathews, the first student enrolled at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts in 1889. Mathews was an active alumnus, and the award encourages student leaders to go on to become alumni leaders. This year, two recipients are University Scholars:

Justin Michael Boucher
Justin Michael Boucher, a senior in environmental engineering, has served as president of the GLBT Community Alliance, as an Alternative Service Break team leader and as an Engineering Ambassador. He also worked as a DJ at campus radio station WKNC-FM and as a site coordinator with the University Scholars Program language exchange to promote collaboration between students and housekeeping staff members.
Reflecting on his time in the University Scholars Program, Justin says "Scholars Forum and the Outdoor Leadership Series trips connected me to entirely new opportunities and challenges I could not have discovered alone. The Language Exchange Program was an incredible experience to take my spanish out of the classroom and put to good use in our campus community." Justin hopes to enter the workforce in environmental engineering upon graduation.
