What is Scholars Council?Scholars Council is an organization created to serve Scholars. We plan activities for them to attend and study breaks so they can relax. We can do (almost) anything that would in any way benefit the Scholars community.
The Council itself consists of ~30 elected NCSU students who are participating in or have completed the University Scholars Program. Some of our members are also members of SHAC (Sullivan Hall Activities Council) or are former or current SVAs (Scholars Village Assistants).
Scholars Council meets about every other Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. in the Sullivan Classroom. This is where the business meetings occur. These meetings are generally for planning purposes and to discuss the many projects we are working on as a group. Smaller committee meetings are also held throughout the semester. These meeting times are set by the individual committees. All Scholars Council projects are done through committees lead by their own committee chair. Anyone can be on a committee and any council member can be a committee chairperson.

What do Council Members do?Council members have a few responsibilities. They are spelled out in the Council Constitution, but here's a summary:
Attend meetings. It is difficult to serve a large Scholars community when its members don't know what's going on. This includes both the bimonthly, Tuesday night meetings and the smaller committee meetings. Only two missed general meetings are allowed over the academic year, and failure to attend will result in a conference with the executive board. For more information on the meetings, take a look at our minutes. We also have a great time, but Shhhh, you didn't hear that from me.
Be active on committees. This is the next step. We love seeing everyone at meetings, but we also need hard work and effort to plan and execute all the projects we do. So as a member its your responsibility join and lead committees to stay involved in the council and help us accomplish our goals.
Help keep the Scholars Lounge Open. This is the easiest. Council members are assigned usually 2 nights per semester when they need to open the Scholars Lounge (102 Sullivan) and keep it open for other Scholars to use. The lounge is open from 8pm to 10:30pm Monday through Thursday throughout the semester. Members have their own key to the Lounge, and may use it any time they need.
Show your enthusiasm for the Scholars Program. You know what a great program we've got here - let others know. Encourage Scholars to attend Council sponsored events, special events sponsored by the Scholars Office, or any other activity that would benefit Scholars.

More on CommitteesCommittees are the life blood of Scholars Council. With the exception of the standing publicity committee, committees are formed when someone proposes a project and the council votes to do that project. The council chair then asks for volunteers to chair the committee, and generally appoints one person (and on occasion two people) to lead the committee and organize it. Then the Chairperson will ask for volunteers to serve on the committee, and the committee is formed.
The chair of the committee organizes the committee meetings and gives the committee report to Council. He or she also oversees the activities of the committee. It is his or her job to be informed of all activities of the committee and ensure that the project is seen to completion. The chair is encouraged to delegate tasks to his or her committee members and listen to their input about decisions regarding the project.
