Fall 2011 Film Series: America at War
Like films? We do to - and each semester the USP sponsors a Film Series to complement the Scholars Forum. This fall, building off the Scholars Forum theme of "America at War," we will showcase films that, in one way or another, attempt to express that experience. All films are held at 6:00 PM in the Auditorium, D.H. Hill Library. Please note that the doors will close at 6:00 PM. Anyone arriving after the cinema doors have closed will not receive an attendance card and will not receive attendance credit. Also, please note that seating is extremely limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

USP Film Series: Gone with the Wind

This tale of the Old South from the start of the Civil War through to the period of reconstruction focuses on the beautiful Scarlett O'Hara.  It is the epic tale of a woman's life during one of the most tumultuous periods in America's history. 238 mins. 

USP Film Series: The Red Badge of Courage

Based on author Stephen Crane's great american story of the Civil War, actor Audie Murphy as “The Youth” vascilates between wanting to fight and doubting his own courage. In midst of first bloody encounter, he runs away. After seeing dead and wounded, a sense of shame leads him back to his unit, where he distinguishes himself in the next battle. Having overcome his fear of "the great Death" he knows he can face whatever comes. 69 mins.

All star cast includes Morgan Freeman, and Oscar winner Denzel Washington as Pvt. Trip.  After being wounded at the bloody Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, Capt. Robert Shaw played by Matthew Broderick is promoted to colonel and appointed to lead the first all black regiment.  Leading the Massachusetts 54th, Shaw is forced to deal with the prejudices of both the enemy (who had orders to kill commanding officers of blacks), and of his own fellow officers. 122 mins.

Classic Oscar winner (best picture) - In the early years of World War II, the Moroccan city of Casablanca attracts people from all over the world.  Expatriot and former freedom fighter, Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) runs the most popular nightclub in town. Rick discovers his old flame Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) is in town with her husband, Victor Laszlo. Laszlo is a Resistance leader with GeRoomans on his tail; Rick obtains two valuable letters of transit and Ilsa knows Rick can help them get out of the country - but will he? 102 mins.

The story of General George S. Patton, Jr. during World War II….his manner runs the gamut from stern, to jovial, amused, profane and reverent. To Patton, it is obvious that war is the greatest expression of the human condition. His battlefield genius garners him fear and respect from the Germans, and resentment and misunderstanding from the Allies. A military historian and poet, he believes that he is destined for something great during this life, but his stubbornness and controversial methods nearly prevent the fulfillment of that destiny. 172 mins.

Dottie Hinson and Kit Keller are sisters who compete with each other, over everything.  Dottie is the catcher and Kit the pitcher on the same local softball team.  So many young men are overseas fighting the Axis, there is danger that professional baseball will be shut down for the duration of the war.  A well-known candy manufacturer contrives an idea; create a professional baseball league for women.  Led by team manager Jimmy Dugan - a washed-up star angered and embarrassed to be the coach, these women begin a journey that opens up a whole new world, far beyond that of the baseball diamond. 128 mins.

In 1943, a World War II major U.S. offensive is drawing to a close on the South Pacific island of Guadalcanal. To put an end to this campaign, the U.S. Army arrives with a full division of troops and equipment, the goal: break the last resistance of the Japanese. The exploits of this Division are seen through the perspectives of a war weary Sergeant, a power hungry Colonel, a Private who has known only desertion and AWOL, and a Company Commander struggling with his abilities as a leader. 170 mins.

Action packed war drama based on Mark Bowden’s best-seller  detailing a near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993. Over 100 U.S. Army Rangers were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord. A large drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen ensued. Two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters were shot down. The film focuses on the heroic efforts of the various Rangers assigned to this mission. 144 mins.

USP Film Series: The Hurt Locker

Oscar for  Best Picture – An intense portrayal of elite soldiers who have one of the most dangerous jobs in the world: disaRooming bombs in the heat of combat. When a new sergeant, James, takes over a highly trained bomb disposal team amidst violent conflict, he surprises his two subordinates, Sanborn and Eldridge, by recklessly plunging them into a deadly game of urban combat. James behaves as if he's indifferent to death. As the men struggle to control their wild new leader, the city explodes into chaos, and James' true character reveals itself in a way that will change each man forever. 131 mins.
