An Expression of Gratitude

Dear Members of the NC State Community:

Today the Board of Regents of the University of California approved my appointment as Chancellor of the University of California, San Diego, effective August 16, 2004. I am honored and humbled to accept the enormous challenge of accelerating the momentum of UC San Diego in the years ahead.

My decision to move across our great country was extremely difficult. Over the past six years as your Chancellor, I have come to love and respect our University and the NC State Wolfpack family. I am tremendously proud of the scholarly achievements of our esteemed faculty, the dedication of our hard-working staff, the wide-ranging accomplishments of our students, and the unwavering loyalty of our alumni. I am grateful for the strong support of the NC State Board of Trustees, the University of North Carolina Board of Governors and the President. Together with our campus and community partners, we have made significant progress in fulfilling NC State’s land-grant mission of teaching, scholarship, research, and extension in service to the citizens of North Carolina.

As I prepare for new responsibilities at UC San Diego, I reflect on the blessings I have had here in North Carolina. I recall the many friends my husband, Jim, and I have made within the University and across the state, and the enduring bonds those friendships have granted us.

Thank you for the opportunity and privilege of leading NC State and for your steadfast faith in the mission we have shared.
