Park Scholar Finalists outside of North Carolina

Listed alphabetically by state are the 2003 Park Scholar finalists. Choose each state in the pull-down menu below.

 

Alabama

Askia Andrew Harris Hill, son of Dr. Walter and Jill HIll, Tuskegee, Alabama. Askia will graduate from the Alabama School of Math and Science where he is : Captain of the varsity basketball team, member of the activities committee, and particpant in engineering research. He also tutors fellow student in physics, is a member of the National Honor Society, and a member of the National Beta Club. He plans to major in computer engineering.

Colorado

Phuong Que Nguyen, daughter of Vy Nguyen and Phuong Ngo, Denver, Colorado. Phuong will graduate from George Washington High School where she is: Events coordinator of National Honor Society, Events coordinator of Red Cross Youth Corps, and Secretary of Speech and Debate. She also has been a teen volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for the past three summers. She plans to major in biochemistry and molecular biology and later genetic science.

Florida

Shawn Matthew Campbell, son of Brian and Claire Campbell, Lake Mary, Florida. Shawn will graduate from Lake Mary High School where he is Student Body Parliamentarian, on the Varsity Soccer Team, and accepted to the National Honors Society. He is also an active volunteer at his church youth group, mentoring middle school students. He plans to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Erica Lynn Souther, daughter of Larry and Vanessa Souther, Kissimmee, Florida. Erica will graduate from Gateway High School where she is vice president of the Senior Class, secretary of the National Honor Society, and Vice President of the French National Honor Society. She is also a four-year letter winner in Volleyball and Soccer, and participates in the FIRST robotics team 186. She plans to major in Civil Engineering.

Jordan Wallace, daughter of Jamie and Monica Wallace, Tampa, Florida. Jordan will graduate from the International Baccalaureate Program at Hillsborough High School where she is the President of the Student Advisory Commitee, and a Universal Dance Association All-Star. She also volunteers in her community with Hands on Tampa, Idlewild Baptist Church, and is also a member of National Honor Society. Jordan plans to major in Forensic Psychology.

Georgia

Erin Marie Bergstrom, daughter of John and Jodi Bergstrom, Watkinsville, Georgia. Erin will graduate from Oconee County High School where she is president of Anchor Club, vice president of National Honor Society, and has been voted "Most Intelligent." She has been a volunteer leader of Doulos, her church's middle school youth group, a participant in aiding the reading skills of elementary school students, and webmaster for Future Business Leaders of America. She plans in major in Business Management.

Carla Marie Strickland, daughter of David Strickland and Jay Hughes and stepdaughter of Michael Hughes, Statesboro, Georgia. Carla will graduate from Statesboro High School where she is: president of the Stagemasters drama club and member of the Varsity Swim Team for which she received her varsity letter, was voted Most Valuable Player, and competed in the high school state meet championships. She also volunteered with the Statesboro-Bulloch County Parks and Recreation Department, served as Latino Outreach Liaison with the Latino Outreach and Research Services, and will complete 60 semester hours at Georgia Southern University by the time she graduates high school. She plans to major in Art and Design and Communications.

Indiana

Lauren Ashley DuCharme, daughter of Robert and M. Kathleen DuCharme, Lafayette, IN. Lauren will graduate from Central Catholic Jr/Sr High School where she is editor-in-chief of the yearbook, president of Students for Life and is a member of the advanced choir. She also volunteers at the Lafayette Head Start and is a member of Interact, a high school Rotary club. She plans to major in architecture.

Maryland

Paul D. DeNard, son of Paul DeNard and Cassandra Hall, Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Paul will graduate from Eleanor Roosevelt High School where he is the 2003 Senior Class President, the leader of the Christians In Action Bible Club, and a member of the National Honor Society. He also is the Mentoring Department Chairman of the Prince George's Regional Association of Student Governments, is a HOBY Ambassador, and an active participant in many activities at the New Song Bible Fellowship Church. Paul plans to major in Civil Engineering.

Benjamin Erik Gaddy, son of Clifford and Kerstin Gaddy, Kensington, Maryland. Benjamin will graduate from Montgomery Blair High School where he is: Principal Cellist in the School Orchestra and the Student Conductor of the Pit Orchestra. He also volunteers as a math tutor, runs cross country, and attends the Swedish School for Children. He plans to major in Electrical Engineering.

Massachusetts

Patrick Monigle, son of Mark and Diane Monigle of Beverly, Massachusetts. Patrick will graduate from Governor Dummer Academy where he is a FLIP leader(senior to freshman leadership program), Dormitory Proctor, and member of the Discipline Committee. He also is captain of the soccer team, and works at the Greater Beverly YMCA. He plans to major in Geology.

Michigan

Katherine Lorraine Fraley, daughter of Charles and Anne Fraley, Richmond, Michigan. Katherine will graduate from Richmond High School and the Macomb Academy of Arts and Sciences where she is president of Student Government, a member of the National Honor Society, and secretary of the National Beta Club. She also serves as a volunteer religious education teacher's assistant at her church and is a red cross volunteer. She plans to major in chemical engineering.

Mississippi

Jessica Marie Bush, daughter of Perry and Nancy Bush, Steens, MS. Jessica will graduate from the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science where she is: president of the Student Enrivonmental Awareness League, president of the Future Educators of America, and an Emissary. She is also a cheerleader, volunteer French teacher at the Demonstration School located on the MUW campus, and former member of Lowndes' Young Leaders. She plans to major in zoology.

Kristen Marie Ferguson, daughter of Marc and Carol Ferguson, Hamilton, Ohio. Kristen will graduate from Ross Senior High School where she is Co-Treasurer of the Peer to Peer Club, Senior Representative of the Volunteer Advisory Board, and a member of the National Honor Society. She also tutors third graders in reading at Elda Elementary. She plans to major in Zoology with preveterinary studies.

Elizabeth Ann Miller, daughter of Albert and Mary Jane Miller, Wooster, Ohio. Elizabeth will graduate from Wooster High School where she is: captain of the swim team, photographer for the yearbook, and captain of her Relay for Life team. She also actively participates in the Altruistic Society, volunteers at Children Services, and is a member of National Honor Society. She plans to major in criminology/psychology.

Pennsylvania

James A. Sracic, son of Steve and Judy Sracic, Johnstown, PA. Jim will graduate from Bishop McCort High School where he is captain of the swim team, a member of Mu Alpha Theta, a math honor society, and a member of the National Honor Society. He also swims competitively for the YMCA, is a lifeguard, and volunteers as a member of St. Benedict Church. He plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.

South Carolina

Katie Elizabeth Atkinson, daughter of Van and Marie Atkinson, Marion, South Carolina. Katie will graduate from the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics where she is: President of Interact Club, Co-captain of the volleyball team, and a member of National Honor Society. She has also served as a tutor and has volunteered to work with handicapped children. Katie plans to major in Pre-Med, to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy.

Tenise LaShelle Bell, daughter of Ulysses and Earnestine Bell, Beech Island, South Carolina. Tenise will graduate from Silver Bluff High School where she is Student Body President, vice-president of the Future Business Leaders of America, and has been voted “Most Dependable.” She serves on the executive committee of the American Red Cross Youth Board, developed the first Richmond County Safety Fact Book for the Richmond County Department of Health: Safe Communities Coalition of Augusta, and was named South Carolina Business Week’s recipient of the SCANA Corporation Ron McNair Award from among 200 of South Carolina’s top ranking junior and senior participants. Tenise plans to major in Textile and Apparel Management/Apparel.

Colleen Elizabeth Cambre, daughter of Daniel and Cheryl Cambre, Columbia, South Carolina. Colleen will graduate from Spring Valley High School where she is Co Editor-in-Chief of The Viking Shield, the high school newspaper, President of the National Art Honor Society, and Public Relations Officer of the National Honor Society. She also participates in school-wide recycling with the National French Honor Society and is the founder of Art BLITZ, an art outreach program. She plans to major in Graphic Design and minor in Journalism.

Steven Wilson Quick, son of Dr. Steve and Jane Quick, Pamplico,SC. Will will graduate from the SC Governor's School for Science and Mathematics where he is president of Junior Civitans, president of the Explorer's Club, and a member of the National Honor Society. He also is a member of the track, cross country, and tennis teams at school and a Eagle Scout in Boy Scout Troop 477. He plans to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Ian Uttley Willard, son of Meredith Uttley and Bernard Willard, Greenwood, South Carolina. Ian will graduate from Greenwood High School where he is: a member of the regional championship SAT team, a semi-finalist in the American Mathematics Challenge, and a participant in the Physics Olympics. He plans to major in Physics, Computer Science, and Engineering.

Tennessee

Richard Kenan Lauchlin Bethune, son of Dick and Janet Bethune, Rocky Mount, NC. Richard will graduate from The McCallie School where he is: a leader of the school's Habitat for Humanity Chapter, leader of the Boys and Girls Club mentors, and President of the Young Republicans. He also won an Honors Scholar merit scholarship to McCallie, is a National Merit Semifinalist, and won a Japan-America Friendship scholarship to study in Japan this past summer. He plans to major in economics and double minor in Chinese and Japanese.

Katya Marie Casper, daughter of Bob and Arlette Casper, Kingsport, Tennessee. Katya will graduate from Dobyns-Bennett High School where she is vice-president of Mu Alpha Theta, a Math Honor Society, a member of the tennis team, and has been voted "Most Likely to Succeed." She has played the piano in the Kingsport Youth Orchestra and is a veteran member of the Mock Trial Team at Dbyns-Bennett. She plans to major in computer engineering.

Chasta Dawn Hamilton, daughter of the late Russell and Karen Hamilton, Mohawk, TN. Chasta will graduate from Greeneville High School where she is Co-Officer of Service Projects for the National Honor Society, a member of the Scholars' Bowl team, and a member of the Latin Club. She also is a Senior Company Dancer and assistant instructor at The Dance Company in Johnson City, TN and has received scholarships to attend the National Youth Leaders' Conference and Presidential Classroom in Washington, DC. She plans to major in Political Science/ Pre-Law.

John Wade Kelly, son of Gary and Kathy Kelly, Oak Ridge, Tennessee. John will graduate from Oak Ridge High School where he is Student Council President, Cross Country Co-Captain, and is on the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council. He also runs track, is in National Honor Society, and is a volunteer leader for Wyldlife, a Christian outreach program for middle schoolers. John plans to major in Computer Engineering.

Rachel Rhyne, Seymour, Tennessee.

William Blair Walden, son of William and Tracy Walden, Johnson City, TN. Blair will graduate from Science Hill High School where he is President of the Junior Civitan Club, Captain of the Swim Team, and was granted the Raymond Gregory award for outstanding academics and athletics. He is a member of First Christian Church and a Junior Assistant with the National League of Junior Cotillion. He plans to major in Engineering and Math or Physics.

Amanda Rose Youell, daughter of Tom and Wendy Youell, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Amanda will graduate from Girls Preparatory School where she is Treasurer of her class, Vice President of National Honor Society, and Captain of the Varsity Soccer team. She volunteers regularly at the local Community Kitchen and is a member of the Leadership Committee at her school. Amanda plans to major in Mathematics.

Texas

Michael Burlone, son of Dominick and Joyce Burlone, Lake Jackson, Texas. Michael will graduate from Brazoswood High School where he was tuba section leader in the band, member of the debate team, and member of Winter Guard floor crew. He has been a Peer Leader and a member of the Youth Music Ministry at his church and completed the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 325. Michael is a National Merit Semi-Finalist and plans to major in biomedical engineering.

Virginia

John Edwin "Win" Bassett, IV, son of Jeb and Diane Bassett, Martinsville, Virginia. Win will graduate from Martinsville High School where he is captain of the Science Academic Team, drummer in the Jazz Band, and has been voted "Most Likely to Succeed." He has been a volunteer at the SPCA and an intern at Bassett Furniture Industries. Win plans to major in Computer Engineering.

Jennifer Leigh Boyd, daughter of John and Tori Boyd, Chesapeake, VA. Jennifer will graduate from Hickory High School where she is ranked second in her class with a GPA of 4.675, captain of the Varsity Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field teams, and the Reporter for Mu Alpha Theta, a Math Honor Society. She is also a member of the Great Bridge Baptist Church Orchestra. She plans to major in biomedical/biomechanical engineering.

Samantha Berry Cooke, daughter of Michael and Mary Cooke, Blacksburg, VA. Samantha will graduate from Blacksburg High School where she is Co-President of Students Against Destructive Decisions, President of the Dance Club and Co-Secretary of the Senior Class. She also is a dancer in the UJIMA company, a volunteer at the Red Cross Blood Donor Center and was a Rotary Exchange Student to Australia. She plans to major in Architecture.

John Hunter Crews, son of Jim and Bernadette Crews, Lexington, Virginia. John will graduate from Rockbridge County High School where he is: captain of the cross country team, captain of the Indoor Track team, and the Top Cat. He also is a member of the National Honor Society and the senior class council. He plans to major in mechanical engineering.

Gregory Joseph Mulholland, son of John and Nancy, Chesapeake, VA. Greg will graduate from Norfolk Academy where he is captain and founder of the NA Forensics team, layout editor of the literary magazine, and captain of the 2002 crew team. He also participated on the Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) team that received fifth place in the nation, belongs to the Norfolk Academy Community Service Advisory Board, and has been a member of the NA Varsity basketball team for two years. He plans to major in computer engineering.

Samuel Allen Slater, son of David and Patty Slater, Tryon, North Carolina. Sam will graduate from Woodberry Forest School where he is a Prefect, student Ropes Course Instructor, and Tour Guide Coordinator. He also on the Varsity Tennis Team, a member of the school's a cappella group, The Dozen, and a competitor in the annual National Japan Bowl. He plans to major in History.
