RTI Economist
Named NC State Distinguished Management Alumnus

North
Carolina State University's College of Management
has named Dr. Alvin M. Cruze, distinguished vice
president of Research Triangle Institute, as the
college's 2002 Distinguished Alumnus. He will
be recognized Oct. 18 at the college's Graduate
Symposium and at the University's Distinguished
Alumni Awards luncheon. Cruze, of Huntsville,
Ala., earned a Ph.D. in economics from NC State
in 1972.
Cruze
has spent more than 35 years with RTI, an independent,
nonprofit organization devoted to research and
development in a variety of fields, including
health, environment, education and technology.
His assignments at RTI have included analyst,
senior economist, manager of the human resource
economics department, deputy director of the Center
for Development and Resource Planning, director
of the Center for the Study of Social Behavior,
and vice president of the economic and social
systems division. From 1989 until his retirement
in 2002, he was executive vice president and chief
operating officer of RTI.

During
his tenure at the organization, research revenue rose
from $90 million to more than $230 million, and the
staff of technical researchers grew to more than1,400
in 125 disciplines.
Cruze
has supported NC State and the Department
of Economics by serving as a class speaker, recruiting
students to the graduate program, and contributing to
the Graduate Economics Fellowship Fund. In the community,
Cruze serves on the board of directors of the N.C. Association
for Biomedical Research, and formerly served on the
board of N.C. Biotechnology Center. He is a member of
Phi Kappa Phi, Beta Gamma Sigma and the National Institute
of Statistical Sciences.
Cruze
earned a bachelor's degree in business administration
from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree
in statistics from Rutgers University before attending
NC State.
"Throughout his 35-plus-year career, Al Cruze has
maintained a strong connection to his friends, colleagues
and the graduate students in the Department of Economics
at NC State," said Dr. Jon W. Bartley, dean of
the college. "He has always been willing to visit
classes and share his expertise in economic research,
strategic planning and the complexities of a multidisciplinary
research organization such as RTI. We are proud of his
personal and professional accomplishments, and grateful
for his continuing involvement with the college."
