NC State College of Humanities and Social Sciences Honors Alumna

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dr. Julia T. Wood, Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities in the Department of Communication Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, will be honored this month as 2002 Distinguished Alumna of the North Carolina State University College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).

Wood is a renowned leader in the academic study of communication. Among a long list of awards and achievements, she was presented the Teaching and Learning Scholar Award for 2000 by the Carnegie Foundation and the National Communication Association. In the same year, she was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teaching Scholars at UNC-Chapel Hill and was named Scholar of the Year 2000 by the Departments of English and Communication at Duquesne University. She is ranked the number-one author of books and number two for article and book productivity among communication scholars.

"Julia is truly a distinguished and renowned leader in the academic study of communication," said Robert M. Entman, former head of the NC State Department of Communication, in his nomination of Wood.

Wood is a prolific author on communication issues, including numerous books and myriad journal articles and other scholarly publications. Dr. Wood began her academic career in communication with her CHASS degree in 1972. She went on to earn her master's degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University. She returned to Chapel Hill where she has excelled at every stage of her career.
