NC State
College of Engineering Names Outstanding Alumni

The
North Carolina State University College of Engineering
has named S. Frank Culberson of Sugar Land, Texas,
Ross W. Lampe Sr. of Smithfield and Dr. Jerry
S. Lee of Charlotte as Distinguished Engineering
Alumnus Award winners for 2002.
The
awards were announced by Dr. Nino A. Masnari,
dean of the College
of Engineering, at a banquet held Oct. 17
at the Capital City Club in Raleigh as part of
the annual NC State Alumni Weekend activities.
The awards honor alumni whose accomplishments
further their fields and reflect favorably on
the university.
Culberson
is president and CEO of Rimkus Consulting Group.
He received his bachelor's degree in chemical
engineering from NC State in 1960. A native of
Siler City, he began his career with Shell Oil
Company/Shell Chemical Company as a process engineering
and operations coordinator at the Deer Park Manufacturing
Complex in Deer Park, Texas. In 1966 he received
his MBA from the University of Houston and joined
the Pace Company - Pace Consultants (owned by
Jacobs Engineering Group), an energy-consulting
firm.

Frank Culberson
|
In
1987 Culberson left Pace as managing director to join
the Rimkus Consulting Group as senior vice president,
director and one of the founding shareholders. Culberson
has been instrumental in building the company from a
small firm with eight employees in 1987 to its current
size of over 300 employees in 18 offices, including
more than 200 engineers.
Culberson
is a Registered Professional Engineer in Florida, Arizona
and Texas, and a member of the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Ross
W. Lampe, Sr.
|
Lampe
is president of Guy C. Lee Manufacturing Company,
a position he has held since 1959. He received
his bachelor's degree in chemical engineering
from NC State in 1951.
Lampe has been a leader and innovator in the
lumber and building supply industries for several
decades. Lampe has also served as chairman of
the Southern Forest Products Association (1997),
chair of the Southern
Pine Inspection Bureau (1991-93), secretary-treasurer
of the Independent
Builders Supply Association (1976-1993),
president of the Carolina Lumber and Building
Material Dealers Association (1977), president
of the Eastern North Carolina Lumber Manufacturers
Association (1972) and president of the Wood
Fiber Marketing Corporation (1977-1978).
A native of Johnston County, Lampe is an active
member of the community, having served on the
Johnston
Community College Board of Trustees from
1992-97, including serving as chair; as a member
of the Smithfield Housing Authority for 13 years,
including serving as chair; as local director

of
First Citizens Bank, Smithfield; on the Johnston
County Community Foundation, the Ross W. and
Faye L. Lampe Fund; and as a member of the Kiwanis
Club for more than 45 years.
Lampe
is part of a lasting legacy at NC State as the
son of J. Harold Lampe, who served as dean of
the College of Engineering from 1945 to 1962 and
who was pivotal in the early planning of Research
Triangle Park. All of Lampe's four children, as
well as his brother, are NC State alumni. In 1993
the Lampe family, led by Ross Lampe, established
the J.H. Lampe Engineering Excellence Fund, an
unrestricted endowment to the college in honor
of Dean Lampe.

| Lee
is senior vice president of technology and innovation
for Goodrich Corporation. He received his bachelor's
degree in mechanical engineering and his doctorate
in mechanical engineering, both at NC State, in
1963 and 1967, respectively.
A
native of Pamlico County, he began his career
as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering
at NC State.
In
1969 he accepted a position at the Borg-Warner
Research Center in Des Plaines, Ill., as a research
scientist in heat transfer and later became manager
of the heat transfer and applied physics research
group. He also served as general manager of Borg-Warner
Thermoelectrics, a research and development venture
company. In 1979 he joined Goodrich Corporation
as manager of engineering science in the Engineered
Products Group. He served as director of research
and development (1983-1988) and vice president
of technology (1989-1998) for

Dr.
Jerry S. Lee

Goodrich
Aerospace. In 1998 he began his current position
with Goodrich. Lee is responsible for the technology
and innovation plans that are implemented by a
technical staff of over 2,600. Additionally, two
Technical Centers report directly to him.
Lee
is engaged broadly in the encouragement of collaborative
research in universities and government laboratories.
He is a member of the board of trustees for the
Ohio Aerospace Institute; president of the nonprofit
research organization Glennan Microsystems Initiative,
Inc.; and chair of the Industrial Advisory Board
for the Technology and Innovation Campus at the
University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He
serves on the external advisory board of the Department
of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at both
the Ohio State University and NC State, where
he currently serves as co-chair.
