NC State College of Design Taps Freelon as Distinguished Alumnus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The North Carolina State University College of Design has selected Philip Freelon of Durham as its 2002 Distinguished Alumnus. Freelon is the principal architect and president of the Freelon Group, an architecture firm responsible for numerous buildings of note, including several on NC State's campus. Last year, the Freelon Group was awarded the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architect's Firm Award, the highest honor presented to an architectural business by the state chapter.

"Phil is a practitioner of exceptional merit," said Dean Marvin J. Malecha. "His model of practice as a collaborative endeavor has resulted in a number of distinguished projects recognized with design awards. Phil continues his leadership by devoting himself as an advisor to African-American students and interns, encouraging much needed diversity within the architecture profession."

Freelon's professional accomplishments have been matched by his commitment to public service. For more than eight years, the Freelon Group has mentored high school students from Durham and Wake counties. Freelon has served as a past director of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Durham Historic Properties Commission and the NC Capital Preservation Commission, and as a member of the I-40 Land Use Advisory Commission.

Freelon is an active member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Organization of Minority Architects. He takes a special interest in higher education and has served as a lecturer at universities including Harvard, MIT, Hampton University, North Carolina A&T, University of Utah, Howard University, California College of Arts & Crafts, and NC State.
In addition to teaching, Freelon has donated many hours to NC State through service as a member of the Design Guild Board, including a term as board president. He is currently a member of the NC State Board of Visitors, the African-American Community Advisory Committee and the Chancellor's Circle. He has also served on the Design Foundation Board.
