Gen. Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum Scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15

Note to editors: Due to security regulations imposed by the Department of Defense, any member of the media wishing to attend the media session with Gen. Myers at 11:40 a.m. must register with NC State News Services by the morning of Thursday, Nov. 14. You must provide the names of the reporters and photographers planning to attend. Also, News Services needs the same information if you are planning to film Gen. Myers' keynote address at 12:15 p.m. (either live or tape).

The first Gen. Henry Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum - which focuses attention on the importance of leadership development - will open at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 15 at North Carolina State University's McKimmon Center. Media coverage of the forum is welcomed.

Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Congressional Gold Medal recipient, will make his presentation on values-based leadership during the forum's opening session, immediately following an introduction from NC State Chancellor Marye Anne Fox at 10 a.m. in Room 2.

Gen. Richard B. Myers, current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will provide the keynote address in Room 1 at 12:15 p.m. Myers serves as the principal military advisor to the president, the secretary of defense and the National Security Council.

Myers will be available to speak with members of the media at 11:40 a.m. (Please see note to editors, above.)

Retired Army Black Hawk pilot Michael Durant will give the capnote presentation in Room 2 at 3:15 p.m. While piloting an MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Oct. 3, 1993, Durant was shot down and held captive by hostile forces for 11 days. Those events are the basis of the Hollywood film "Black Hawk Down."

There will also be three concurrent, educational seminars from 2 to 3 p.m. examining:

  • Perspectives on Leadership for the New Economy
  • Leadership, Ethics and Public Service: Developing Visionary Leaders in Public and Service Education
  • U.S. Special Operations Forces: Developing Leadership Without Equal

The forum is one of several program offerings of the Gen. Henry Hugh Shelton Leadership Initiative, which is administered by NC State's Office of Extension and Engagement. The initiative offers executive development programs, faculty and student leadership development experiences and youth development conferences.

Reporters seeking individual interviews with forum participants should check with pressroom attendants in Room 5 for speaker availability.
