NC State
Student Wins Prize for Mini Printer/Fax/Scanner
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bryant
Griffin, a senior industrial design major at North
Carolina State University, won second prize in the
recent "Design the Business Printer of the Future"
contest sponsored by Lexmark International, and was
awarded $7,500 and a Lexmark laser printer. His design,
named the "Mini," is a small - 3.5 inches
by 4.5 inches -- mobile device that prints, faxes, and
scans documents, and features a unique telescoping mechanism
that holds a standard sheet of paper for scanning or
printing.
Griffin, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., whose family now
lives in Charlotte, said that he concentrated on current
trends in technology products - multiple functions and
smaller sizes -- while designing his device. He credits
Charles Joyner, professor of art and design, and Bong-Il
Jin, visiting assistant professor of design, both in
the College of Design, for encouraging his participation
in the contest.
Competitors submitted a 1,000-word article describing
their devices, a sketch of the physical design and a
three-minute video testimonial. First-place honors went
to students at Syracuse University for a design that
layers multiple pages of information onto a single page
of paper; third place was awarded to a Brigham Young
University entry that prints by using light to activate
portions of pre-treated paper.
More information about the contest, the winners and
judges can be found at Lexmark's
web site.
